Writer Square, the pedestrian shopping center and mixed-use development between Larimer Square and the 16th Street Mall, has been a downtown fixture for nearly 30 years. But as we report in this week's cover story, "Writer's Block," new changes at Writer Square are making some people nervous that part of what's made the block special for so long will soon be lost.
Writer Square resident Nick Jovene knows more about the block's past than nearly anybody, since he was the project manager on the original development. Check out the Jovene's photo above of the square not long after it was complete, and click "Continue" to see the project mid-construction (notice how empty downtown looks around it), as well as a photo of the work in an old Masonry magazine.
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
