Yesterday I visited Phil’s Place, the great dive at 35th and Larimer — which suddenly boasts a fancy new back bar. From the photo, several readers thought I was at Don’s Mixed Drinks — which has also undergone an unexpected upscaling that did not stop at the bathrooms, as promised.
But of all the taproom transformations over the past year, the most amazing (read: depressing) might be at the Satire — once a dark, dark hole with a black ceiling and red walls that was transformed into a Mexican cantina a decade or so ago. But now it’s all bright, polished metal. Can a dive be so…shiny?
Which got me thinking: What’s the most frightening bar renovation over the last year? Post your answers below. Winner will get a round at Phil’s.
