Support the independent voice of Denver and help keep the future of Westword free.
Partners Michael Brockhoff and Sam Roots have plans of longevity for the vacant quarters at 5280 West 25th Avenue, the cursed building that most recently held the extremely short-lived Johnie's Bar-B-Que (and prior to that, Tiki Torch and Okoboji Inn). The two have completely gutted the space, which will soon become Providence Tavern, a friendly neighborhood bar with good food and good beer, according to Roots. "This is a great neighborhood that deserves great bars, and our goal is to be a place where everyone can come to drink well and eat well," says Roots, who hopes to have the tavern up and running by the end of the year.
When the tavern opens, it'll join a several other new restaurants in Edgewater, including GB Fish and Chips and Vina Pho and Grill, both of which opened last month across the street from Sloan's Lake.
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
