First Look: Latigo Brings More Mexican Cuisine to the Ballpark Neighborhood

In January, we made a list of eleven vacant restaurant spaces that were calling out for new tenants. Some of those have since been filled, or at least claimed. There's Sera's Ramen Enclave, a new favorite that's now serving noodle bowls in the former Bang! space on West 32nd Avenue, and Illegal Burger, which took over last month where Moon Tower Tacos vacated at 609 Grant Street. And now another slot has been filled: Latigo is serving Mexican cuisine at 2229 Blake Street, in a corner spot that Zi South exited last year.

Latigo is the latest eatery from chef Ignacio Leon, who also operates Paxia and three outposts of Los Carboncitos with his brothers Cesar and Roberto. The new restaurant is named after a strap on a riding saddle; a sign in the restaurant describes the latigo as "honest and authentic in its design, timeless and reliable in its utility."

Leon is an alumnus of the Instituto Culinario Mexicano in Mexico City and brings a range of traditional and regional Mexican dishes to Latigo, including cochinita pibil from the Yucatan, pescado a la Veracruzana (fish cooked with olives, capers and tomatoes), molcajetes and Oaxacan-style clayudas — enormous toasted corn tortillas layered with black beans, white cheese, avocado and skirt steak.

The interior hasn't changed drastically from that of the building's former tenant: A large oval bar is surrounded by cushy booths and a few high-top tables, with enough room to seat more than 300 guests inside and on a sidewalk patio outside.

The restaurant is open Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m and  Friday and Saturday until midnight. A full bar serves happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. daily. Keep reading for more photos.
