Now, though, this space in the former Olinger mortuary complex has gotten a stunning makeover courtesy its new tenant: Teocalli Cocina. This is the fourth location of a concept founded by Grant Hopfenspirger, who opened the first Teocalli in Lafayette in 2019. And with this move, not only does impressive Mexican food return to the space, but so does head chef, Julio Gaspar, who was chef de cocina at Lola before joining the Teocalli team. Bienvenido!
Over the past ten years, Terese and Mark Nery have grown Onefold, their breakfast-and-lunch concept, into another homegrown mini-empire. After a long wait, their fourth eatery just opened in the former home of a Dusty Boot in Greenwood Village. Nearby in Centennial, the eleventh Colorado location of Birdcall, a bigger Denver-based chain, just landed on July 25. Another outpost of a local venture, Walter's 303 Pizza & Publik House, opened on Santa Fe Drive. And Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, the latest link in a Japanese venture, finally opened its first Colorado eatery in Boulder.
Two bars shuttered this week. Over Yonder Brewing, a Phish-inspired brewery two miles from Red Rocks, closed on Saturday, July 20. “Despite our deep desire to remain open and continue creating unique and delectable craft beer for this incredible community, we’ve reached a point where continuing operations is no longer sustainable,” the owners had announced earlier in July. “We explored every possible path to stay open, but unfortunately, with the challenges including doing business in an area that’s been especially tough on small, independent operators, those efforts didn’t lead to a viable solution.”
Also drying up was Sovereign Bar & Entertainment Venue, a watering hole in the Landmark complex, which closed on July 24 after a last-second crowdfunding campaign failed to raise enough money to keep the place going.
And some big bar closings are coming. After eighteen years (and a namecheck by Mayor Mike Johnston in his State of the City speech on July 21), Cap City Tavern will be issuing last call at 8 p.m. on July 27. That's the same day that Denver Sweet will close at 776 Lincoln Street.
In other restaurant news:
- The owners of Abide Ride were killed July 21 as they drove down to Denver to pick up supplies for their popular, Conifer-based food truck.
- License No. 1 made Historic Hotels' Top 25 Historic Bars list, even though this watering hole in the historic Hotel Boulderado isn't all that historic.
- Rising Tiger Grill and Devin "Tiger" Keopraphay will compete on the next season of The Great Food Truck Race, which premieres on August 3.
