The latest addition to Denver's coffee scene isn't a new shop — it's Secret Coffee Party, a daytime pop-up at different locations on select Sunday mornings. Designed to celebrate coffee culture, it embodies the growing sober movement, driven by an increasing interest in alcohol-free experiences.
The founder of Secret Coffee Party had started DJing during COVID and was inspired to get the party started after hearing of similar events in other cities. "A lot of people aren't clubbing any more for entertainment — they're looking at other methods," says the organizer, who asks to keep their identity anonymous, in keeping with the event's name. "There's a want and need for people to experience something different revolving around coffee. We're not promoting alcohol at all — it's a coffee-based event. There's demand for daytime events with some good music in a pop-up atmosphere."
The music is what sets Denver's version apart. "I'm a really big fan of music, and I think a lot of us are — but are tired of going to nightclubs and thinking that's the only way to experience a musical event," says the organizer. "I lived in Tulum for quite a while and DJed out there, and that's kind of the sound I'm into: Afro house, Latin house and tech house. I'm trying to bring that kind of flavor into it and put my own twist on it by incorporating performers like a saxophone, someone on drums, or some kind of show."
Just two weeks after it was introduced, Secret Coffee Party had over 5,000 followers on social media. More than 250 people registered for the inaugural event on April 13 at Krav Coffee, with a Secret Sushi After Party at neighboring Mizu, featuring several local DJs, including DJ Khuu.
The second installment is scheduled for this Sunday, May 4, at Zero Hour Cafe inside of Taxi, where there will be a secret lineup of DJs and other surprises, as well as custom lattes and other specials available for purchase. "It's a club in a coffeeshop — good coffee, good house music and a good time," says the organizer.
Because of high demand and a smaller space, the ticket price was set at $14.14; still, all spaces were gone within 24 hours.
The organizer wants to incorporate more health and wellness into future events, either with a run club or yoga class followed by coffee, networking, music and dancing. For news of the next pop-up, sign up for the Secret Coffee Party newsletter.
