If you're thinking about heading out for some Mexican food in the Berkeley neighborhood this week, look somewhere other than Tacos Jalisco, which closed at the beginning of last week for remodeling.

A sign on the door states that the longtime 38th Avenue favorite will reopen on Saturday, January 2, with food and drink specials to help bring in the new year. When I visited a year ago to bathe in the restaurant's smooth, gravy-like green chile, I wrote: "The decor inside Tacos Jalisco is as much a mishmash of styles and decades as the menu itself. Mostly it just seems cobbled together from inexpensive furnishings over a long period of time."

We're looking forward to seeing what stays and what goes with this weekend's unveiling.
