The Slotted Spoon Meatball Eatery opened in the University Hills shopping center three years ago this month, bringing a new fast-casual concept to Denver: meatballs, and lots of them — meatballs on bread, meatballs on pasta, even meatballs on salads. But in a neighborhood where Beau Jo's Pizza has remained a constant for decades, the Slotted Spoon is now closed.

The restaurant was opened by Johnny Coast and Alex Comisar, along with chef Jensen Cummings, an expat of the fine-dining scene who headed Row 14 Bistro and also worked at TAG downtown. Cummings has been more active of late as a restaurant consultant, helping with the openings of the BSide (which closed last fall) and the brand new Crafty Fox Taphouse & Pizzeria, as well as running his own Brewed Food culinary venture.
