Before tech-house seemingly became a synonym for trance, most artists who dabbled in the genre hoped they sounded at least something like James What (due at NORAD this Friday, August 3), a powerhouse who's excelled at blending the mechanical, synthetic tones of techno with the sass and soul of upbeat house music. You've seen his music on Pokerflat, Crosstown Rebels and other such illustrious labels; he's also widely known for his partnership with fellow producer Dan Berkson. His clean, powerful sound is like the electronic-music version of a stripped-down classic motorcycle: elegant and gritty, wrapped up in one slick, warm package that could take you miles in mere moments but is much better slowed down on a deserted road and allowed to come to life.
