Ever since Comedy Works came into being in 1981, it has served not only as a bastion for professional comedians, but also as a sort of after-school program for budding artists. “A big part of our business is growing local comedians,” says marketing manager Justin Levy. To that end, the club hosts a New Faces Contest each year, enticing recognition-hungry comedians with $500, free tickets from Frontier Airlines and possibly a little D-list famedom.
Every Monday from May through August, nine comedians will have five minutes each to elicit laughs, grunts, snorts — really, any emission of that nature — from a panel of judges, who will choose three people to move on to the quarter-finals in August.
Doors for tonight’s round open at 6:45 p.m. at 1226 15th Street; the show starts at 8. For tickets, $12, or information, call 303-595-3637 or go to www.comedyworks.com.
Mondays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 7. Continues through July 30
