We’re not in Kansas anymore! With a release datelined Los Angeles, the Sundance Film Festival just announced that the next edition of the legendary international festival will make its debut in Boulder from January 21 through January 31, 2027.

While the dates are new, the fact that Sundance is moving to Boulder — after a three-way contest with Cincinnati and Park City, where the fest got its start — is no surprise. That was announced with much ceremony last March. For Boulder, it was a homecoming of sorts, since fest founder Robert Redford had attended the University of Colorado; in fact, he’d originally wanted to start a film festival in Boulder back in the ’70s.

“I’m beyond excited to welcome the Sundance Film Festival to Colorado starting in 2027,” said Governor Jared Polis, who lives in Boulder, in welcoming the initial announcement. “Powerful films tell our stories; who we were, who we are, and who we aspire to be. Here in Colorado, we also celebrate the arts and film industry as a key economic driver, job creator, and important contributor to our thriving culture. Now, with the addition of the iconic Sundance Film Festival, we can expect even more jobs, a huge benefit for our small businesses including stores and restaurants, and to help the festival achieve even greater success.”

Although the fest will no longer be in Utah, Sundance organizers promise that it will continue to feature a wide range of world premieres, important conversations, special events and more.

“Working closely with the Colorado community, the 2027 Sundance Film Festival is already in our sights as we build towards an exciting debut in Boulder, where our programming will meet audiences next January,” says Eugene Hernandez, director of the Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming. “Nestled at the base of Colorado’s iconic Flatirons, venues across the city and CU Boulder’s campus provide an ideal setting for festivalgoers from across the world to come together, revel in art, spark conversation, and create unforgettable memories. Boulder offers a renowned creative arts and tech scene, paired with the vibrant CU Boulder students, faculty, and staff. We’ll share more details in the coming months and hope you’ll join us on our journey to Boulder as we build the Sundance Film Festival’s new home.”

The announcement also revealed the venues for the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, including these theaters: Boedecker Theater — Dairy Arts Center, Boulder High School Auditorium, Boulder Theater, Casey Middle School Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Cinemark Century Boulder, eTown Hall, Gordon Gamm Theater — Dairy Arts Center, Macky Auditorium Concert Hall — University of Colorado Boulder, Muenzinger Auditorium — University of Colorado Boulder, and Roe Green Theatre — University of Colorado Boulder.

Talks and other festival programming will be offered at Old Main — University of Colorado Boulder, Canyon Theater, Boulder Public Library District, Dairy Arts Center and eTown Hall.
