After going on hiatus in 2010, reality-TV Lazarus Last Comic Standing was resurrected through some behind-the-scenes retooling, guided by executive producer Wanda Sykes, that banned the schadenfreude-courting open auditions and Real World-style internecine drama.

“NBC’s Last Comic Standing has once again provided much-needed national exposure for some very talented comedians,” says Mike Raftery of Comedy Works Entertainment. While many Denver comedy fans best remember the eighth season for its viral showdown between Roseanne Barr and Ben Kronberg — a highly entertaining (though sometimes uncomfortable) intergenerational clash between two comedians who started out working clubs here in town — the series also provided a televised showcase for working comedians with well-polished acts.

“It’s always great to see a comic like Rocky LaPorte, who has been headlining clubs for over 25 years, become an ‘overnight’ success,” Raftery notes. Previous Last Comic Standing winners — including Denver’s Josh Blue — have gone on to record specials and headline tours of their own, so this show gives viewers a chance to catch rising comedic talent midway through their ascent.

And now you can see eighth-season finalists LaPorte, Lachlan Patterson, Nikki Carr, Rod Man and Joe Machi in person, when they hit the stage at 8 p.m. tonight at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place. For tickets, $29.50 to $39.50, visit altitudetickets.com or call 303-893-TIXS.
