Be prepared to get weird, get loud and get innovative tonight at the Bizarro Slam, a poetry slam that disregards rules and tradition. Organized by EarthCity — a duo made up of musicians Seleckta SunRa and poet Sunflower DuBois — the gathering is meant to form a deeper connection between poets, singers, MCs and performance artists in the atmosphere of an open performance space.

Bizarro Slam “was inspired by necessity,” says DuBois. “Far too often, there is a separation amongst slam poets and open mics. Without getting into the politics of it, we simply want to remedy that.” LadySpeech Sankofa and the local musicians of Black Lash will be featured performers in this three-round slam, along with a dozen open-mic participants from varying backgrounds.

The gathering begins at 8 p.m. at Gypsy House Cafe, 1279 Marion Street; entry is $5, and proceeds benefit Let the Children Play: E(art)h Day in the Park, a companion kid-friendly event coming up in April. For more information, visit the Bizarro Slam’s Facebook event page.
Fri., March 28, 8 p.m., 2014
