Big Choice Brewing opens in Broomfield today, pouring a little beer culture into a craft beer gap along the Highway 36 corridor. The 2,500-square-foot brewery and tap room will have four beers to start with and eight within a few weeks.
To help them get ready, owners Tyler Ruse and National Miller, who were both raised in Boulder County, took a brewing immersion class from Tom Hennessy, owner of Colorado Boy Brewing in Ridgway. (The $2,500 class prepares would-be brewery owners for opening their own places, offering advice on everything from the brewing process to pub design and bookkeeping systems to licensing.)
The name for the brewery is taken from the California punk band Face to Face, which released an album in 1994 called Big Choice. Since Ruse and Miller both liked the band, they decided to use the name; they also plan to deck the place out in late-’80s/ early-’90s music, movies and skateboarding paraphernalia.
Today at 3 p.m., the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce will go a ceremonial ribbon cutting, followed by happy hour and the Oskar Blues BoneWagon food truck. On Saturday, Big Choice will kick off its grand opening weekend at 11 a.m. with a block party, free foot and a bouncy castle for the kids.

City Star Brewing in Berthoud is also set to open this weekend, and another eight breweries across the state have plans to open within the next two months.
