The Five Points neighborhood in Denver has a rich musical history, with jazz artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis performing there from the 1930s through the 1950s. Today Spangalang Brewery is continuing that legacy by merging craft beer with urban culture.

Norman Harris, co-owner of Spangalang, says his goal is to advance the legacy of Five Points into the future and create a space for the community to come together. On November 2, it will host an EP release by Q the Poet — aka Quincy "Q the Poet" Hull, a poet for over thirty years — along with JJ Brown's Raw Soul, an R&B group, and Fiamoré, a seven-piece band that fuses R&B, funk and soul.

Harris believes that Saturday’s show perfectly demonstrates how Spangalang is dedicated to showcasing the best in urban culture.

“Q the Poet is curating his EP release show and bringing around some solid talent that's going to fill out a night of just incredible entertainment that aligns with what we're trying to do at Spangalang in terms of having a space for creatives,” Harris says. Spangalang regularly hosts Soul Sundays featuring live R&B music and jazz, as well as DJs playing soul, funk and hip-hop.

In addition to co-owning Spangalang, Harris serves as the executive director of the Five Points Business Improvement District. After concluding this year with a holiday celebration that will be a collaboration between area businesses and neighborhoods, he hopes to host music events throughout Five Points in 2025.

“We have a pretty aggressive plan to have quite a few events that really put music at the center of the program to bring people together," he says. "So we're still kind of in the planning phases of getting all the dates together, but we really want folks to really put the Welton Corridor at the top of the list of places to go in 2025."

But first, you can go to Spangalang to hear Q the Poet.
