If you're flying out of Denver this morning, July 10, there's a decent chance your plane is delayed.

As of 8:45 a.m., Denver International Airport was leading the country in flight delays, according to FlightAware's Misery Map, which counts 94 delays so far at DIA. According to FlightAware, that represents well over one-third of the outgoing flights at one of the world's busiest airports this morning.

There have been no announcements on DIA channels addressing the delays yet, but National Weather Service forecasts show a severe thunderstorm warning and strong wind gusts around the airport and nearby towns through 4:30 p.m.

"Severe Thunderstorm Warning continues for Denver Intl Airport CO and Bennett CO until 4:30 AM MDT. This storm will contain wind gusts to 70 MPH!" warns the NWS Boulder branch.

Today's news comes after a handful of other weather-related challenges for flights going in and out of DIA. On July 8, over 800 flights were delayed and eleven flights heading to Denver had to be diverted to Colorado Springs because of strong winds and potential thunderstorms. In a status update just issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, weather was confirmed as the cause for delays, which are expected to run around an hour on average.

"Due to WEATHER / WIND, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving Denver International Airport, Denver, CO (DEN). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 56 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination," according to the FAA.

Airborne arrivals at DIA may be delayed up to fifteen minutes as well, the FAA added.

Denver airport spokesman Michael Konopasek says DIA officials are hopeful that flights will be cleared up by the afternoon, but that's ultimately up to the FAA.

"It's going to be wrapped up, we think, within the next hour, and that's when the next flights will be taking off," he says.

If you're flying out of Denver today, Konopasek recommends checking with your airline and looking for an updated flight status before leaving for the airport.

"Also, be aware that even though you see a delay, that can always change. Sometimes flights are delayed until they're not," he says. "With weather, it can be more unpredictable."

Especially in Colorado.
