At 9 a.m. tomorrow, September 25, Colorado's Justice for J6 rally is slated to start on the west steps of the State Capitol — and if local authorities are girding for trouble of the sort that struck Washington, D.C., on January 6, when the U.S. Capitol was overrun by protesters certain that Donald Trump had been defrauded out of the presidency, there have been no overt indications so far.
Then again, the heavily hyped Justice for J6 rally in D.C. on Saturday, September 18, wasn't exactly a repeat of its out-of-control progenitor. Even a reporter for the ultra-conservative Washington Examiner conceded that the several hundred protesters who turned up were outnumbered by law enforcement and members of the media. Moreover, the protest held in Colorado on January 6 was a sad pageant that attracted a relative handful of disgruntled folks.
But turnout isn't the focus for the Colorado Justice for J6 coordinator, who identifies herself only by her first name, Darci. She says she'd be satisfied if one person is "educated about the mistreatment of these political prisoners. If ten to fifteen people show up, we will be ecstatic."
The rally is being coordinated by Look Ahead America, a national organization whose mission statement reads: "There are millions of rural and blue-collar patriotic Americans who are disaffected and disenfranchised from the nation’s corridors of power. Their fears ignored, their priorities dismissed, their values ridiculed, they’ve become cynical and pessimistic about a government that so often does not hear their voices. Our mission is to register, educate, and enfranchise these disaffected citizens and ensure that their voices are not just heard but heeded and that the American Dream becomes their dream again. We will also organize and guide patriotic citizens in lobbying their state legislatures and local governments on America First initiatives like fighting corporate censorship and ensuring voter integrity."
Nonetheless, Darci stresses that the Justice for J6 event isn't focused on false claims of election fraud that have been roundly rejected by courts all over the country. "This rally is not about the 2020 election," she says. "This rally is about and for the men and women who are charged with non-violent crimes that have been in prison for eight-to-nine months without due process, which violates both their 6th and 8th amendment rights."
At least six Coloradans have been charged by federal prosecutors in relation to the January 6 breaching of the U.S. Capitol — among them Jacob Clark, who was photographed squaring off to fight against a law enforcement officer, and Jeffrey Sabol, captured in video helping to drag a fallen officer down steps leading to the building.
Look Ahead America describes the September 18 Justice for J6 rally in Washington, D.C., as a great success, even though the mainstream media has generally characterized it as a flop. Asked about this apparent disconnect, Darci responds, "This is not a question that, we, as the state rally coordinators, can answer. But I ask you, how do you measure success? Number of attendees? Amount of free press/publicity? Our goal is to let fellow Americans know that U.S. citizens are being treated unjustly and their constitutional rights are being violated. Not for what they did, but for what they believe. So again, how do you measure a successful event?"
She encourages doubters to check out what she calls the "J6 prisoner database" on the Look Ahead America website: "Read their charges. Then you can tell me if you think their treatment is justified."
The overwhelming majority of people who've seen violent footage from January 6 will likely land in a very different place than Darci and her cohorts.
"There's no way for us to know who will attend," Darci says of the September 25 event at the State Capitol, adding that she is uncertain "if people will exercise their Second Amendment rights under Colorado law" and bring a firearm with them. "We expect any attendees to be peaceful and respectful," she stresses.
