Jamie Carrillo and Angelo Arellano allegedly bring toddler on shoplifting trip, police chase

The caption on a photo of Jamie Carrillo and Angelo Arellano found on her Facebook page notes that the couple have been an item for more thirteen years -- and one way to remain close is to do lots of things together.

Then again, maybe it's not the best idea to include getting into a car chase witih police on your things-to-share list -- especially if there's a toddler in the car.

At about 11:10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, according to the Lakewood Police Department, officers responded to the Walmart near Colfax and Wadsworth on a shoplifting beef that had quickly escalated. Cops say a man and woman later identified as Arellano and Carrillo tried to leave the store with "numerous types of merchandise" when they were spotted by a security guard.

Arellano allegedly responded by brandishing a handgun as a way of letting the security guard know he didn't really want to stick around and chat.

By the time the cops arrived, the couple were climbing into a gray SUV -- but when officers tried to stop it, the vehicle took off, starting a chase that soon crossed over the line dividing Lakewood and Denver, bringing officers from the latter jurisdiction into the situation, too.

Finally, near 12th Avenue and Perry Street, the SUV stopped and Arellano took off, leaving Carrillo and a small child behind.

She was quickly taken into custody -- and the child was put in foster care.

By the way, there's no mention of the toddler being with Carrillo and Arellano when they emerged from the store. Does that mean they left the child in the car while they were picking up a few items? If so, we hope they at least gapped the window.

For the next hour or more, Arellano remained at large -- but he wound up paying for this extra dollop of freedom. He was eventually located by a dog from the K9 unit, which bit him seriously enough in the process that he had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment.

In the end, both Arellano and Carrillo were booked on charges that include aggravated robbery, theft, felony menacing, child abuse and what are described as "several traffic violations."
