CSU Undie Run Boycott Call Ignored by 3,000, Bare Breasts = Police Contact

Last week, as we reported, CSU encouraged students not to take part in BARE, formerly known as the Undie Run, which was scheduled for Friday night, May 6.

So, too, did the organizer of the previous two runs.

In the end, however, plenty of folks ignored this call.

About 3,000 of them.

CSU's e-mail in advance of the run stressed that "the students who were trying to organize the run this year chose to pull out because they were unable to get insurance for this activity."

Moreover, CSU maintained that the clothing left behind after the run, which was supposed to be donated to the needy, would be "diverted to the landfill," based on what happened in 2014 and 2015. The first year, the university stated, 7,745 pounds of clothing were left behind, but only 1,683 pounds worth was actually donated; the rest wasn't in good enough shape. And in 2015, the run took place in the rain and the clothing became so moldy that it had to be discarded.

Also mentioned was the cost to the university (an estimated $15,000 for cleanup) and the fact that "participants are photographed and videoed by onlookers and other participants, and these images can live forever on the Internet."

The Fort Collins Coloradoan estimates the number of participants at 3,000, some of whom chanted “U-S-A” and “Proud to be a CSU Ram" — though one of the videos on view below also features a very prominent "Fuck CU."

Nonetheless, the paper points out that fewer pieces of clothing were left behind than in previous years, with most runners showing up on the campus's intramural fields already stripped down to their underwear.

Cleanup was said to have only taken a few minutes.

There was a heavy police presence at the event....

...and the Coloradoan confirms that "law enforcement briefly detained [three] women who exposed their breasts."

This act wouldn't have been illegal had a campaign by an organization called Go Topless Fort Collins been successful. Last year, the group campaigned to have the line "the breast or breasts of a female" removed from the city's public-indecency ordinance.

But last October, FoCo's city council voted unanimously against the Go Topless Fort Collins proposal. The only exceptions granted were for breastfeeding mothers and girls ages ten and younger.

Even so, police say the three women contacted on Friday won't be cited. Instead, their cases will be handled through the university's discipline system.

Also investigated were a couple of criminal-mischief incidents, and the Coloradoan reveals that "signs, barricades and a residence hall window were also damaged." Citations could follow in those instances should the scofflaws be identified.
