No. 24: A Hamburger at Bob’s Atomic Burger
   Bob’s Atomic Burgers in Golden doesn’t have a roster filled with goofy names and crazy ingredients. If you want a burger, it’s just called a hamburger. Extras are either free — like the tomato, onion and pickled jalapeños on the mountainous mouthful pictured here — or cost a buck each for the likes of bacon, green chile, guacamole or a fried egg (cheese will set you back 80 cents). Whatever you choose, it will be mounded on a six-ounce patty formed to order from fresh-ground beef. And while that beef is cooked to a pink-free medium, the fat-to-lean ratio definitely leans toward fat, so your burger will be juicy and dripping.
Bob’s opened in 2012 in the shadow of Golden’s Table Mountain and has remained mostly a local secret. But the drive’s not too bad outside of rush hour, and a sunny spot on the patio with a fat burger in hand will go far toward erasing the bustle of Denver a few miles down the road. Once you’re there, keep in mind that the fries are good, but the onion petals (similar to onion rings) make a great side, too. And if you like a messy meal, there are several house sauces to amp up the flavors.
A good burger, once picked up, should never be set down. A hamburger from Bob’s Atomic is just the right size, and is stacked to be powered through without coming up for air. If you have to set a burger down, you’re probably not enjoying it that much anyway. And if you have to use a knife and fork, next time just order the meatloaf. At Bob’s, your burger will be gone long before you think to stop for frivolous things like beverages, conversation or oxygen.
