Inspired by Nordic folklore and mythology as a child, creator Kasing Lung created Labubu in 2015 through a story series called The Monsters. Shortly after the series kicked off, Hong Kong-based figurine maker How2Work produced the figurines as the story unfolded.
In 2019, Chinese toy company Pop Mart partnered with Lung and produced Labubus, which gained mass attention when celebrities such as LISA, Dua Lipa and Lizzo began sporting the doll on their bags. The blind-box style dolls, which tend to retail at around $30 a piece, garnered $423 million in revenue in 2024 alone.
These eerie yet charismatic dolls have become a status symbol on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Middle-aged adults are having mental breakdowns at Pop Mart locations, and a 102-year-old Hungarian grandmother and viral star, Carole Roth, is fixating on the toy. Meanwhile, creators are also showing off their Lafufus (counterfeit Labubus), in an effort to rage bait fans and make it clear that Labubus are the epitome of the blind-box fad that will fade out one day, whether you like it or not. Seriously, it's just another trend in consumer culture that will probably result in dusty piles of Labubus and Lafufus in thrift stores a couple of years from now. Make way, Squishmallows.
But you have to admit, they're kind of cute. So if you want to try your luck at getting your hands on a Labubu this weekend, here are five shops across Denver and beyond that have these furry creatures available for purchase. Just make sure the store has them in stock and they are authentic before you go, as the dolls tend to sell out quickly, and you don't want to be the next person having a breakdown over a literal plush toy.
