January was a seesaw of openings and closings; with the shuttering of one restaurant came the unveiling of another. While California-based vegan chain Native Foods Cafe closed two of its fast-casual locations (most prominently, the 16th Street Mall store), a cozy, locally owned plant-based joint called the Handy Diner opened at 2958 Downing Street in Five Points. Though we lost last year’s Best Burger when Jimmy’s Urban Bar & Grill lost its lease downtown, TAG Burger Bar sprouted a second spot at 3759 Lipan Street, and Illegal Burger moved into Writer Square.
Although Wurstküche’s two Los Angeles beer halls have proven wildly popular in that city, the version that came to Broadway last spring never caught on, closing after less than a year. But local bar owners Lenka Juchelkova and Mike Huggins, who already operate Union Lodge No. 1 downtown and the Arvada Tavern, just swung open the doors of their second Arvada establishment, Kline’s Beer Hall, which is inspired by European originals but offers distinctly Colorado appeal. The western suburb did lose another beer stop, though. The Arvada Beer Company closed this month — one of the first to do so since the new wave of craft breweries inundated the Front Range some five years ago.
And there's plenty to look forward to this month, with Southern-cuisine specialist Arcana in Boulder, taco/pizza combo Mas Kaos on Tennyson Street, Colfax Avenue bakery Humble Pie and a second Biju’s Little Curry Shop all anticipating February openings.
