Featuring current and recent members of the Dalhart Imperials, the Honky Tonk Hangovers, Eddie Clendening & the Blue Ribbon Boys and Local 33, Ethyl and the Regulars might appear to be spreading themselves a little thin. Yet there's nothing diluted or impure about the quintet's music. For the past couple of years, the Regulars have spread their brand of country, rockabilly and jump blues across the Front Range, a potent, rootsy brew spruced up with pedal steel, mandolin and upright bass. With an ear toward tradition, the group's sets (catch one on Saturday, April 22, at 3 Kings Tavern) are split between rousing originals and covers of classics by such hallowed heroes as Bob Wills, Johnny Horton and Harlan Howard -- not to mention upstarts like Big Sandy. The fivesome will soon begin recording its debut full-length, a live-in-the-studio affair due in September that hopes to capture the raucous, reverent energy of Ethyl's on-stage blowouts. It's nothing flashy, innovative or hip -- just real, full-strength Americana.
