You really don't have to celebrate Mother's Day like everyone else. Modern moms are an independent bunch, and they may not want to spend their big day knitting by the hearth or enjoying whatever stereotypical pastime they're supposed to prefer. Moms just aren't like that anymore. Following are five places where you can take your fierce, witty, sassy, life-loving mom -- or just shop for her.

Horseshoe Craft and Flea Market 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, free Moore Olinger Howard Chapel parking lot The Horseshoe is a perennial Best of Denver favorite -- it's been our Best Flea Market for three years running and only seems to get better each year. And when the market returns each spring, like rain clouds and crabapple blossoms and the swallows of Capistrano, it's cause to kick up your heels and go. The spring 2013 kickoff is specially tailored to Mother's Day, making it a great place to find gifts or, even better, shop with mom in tow. Choose from Jemma Baby's Yummy Bath Fizzees, vintage Parisian earrings from My French Attic, MOM charm bracelets from Beads on the Bus, home spa gift baskets by Spinster Sisters and hundreds of other mom-worthy giftables, and while you're there, enjoy food truck fare, live music and DIY crafting booths. Better Block Five Points 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11, free Welton Street in Five Points Plenty of mothers can dig a day outdoors, especially if it's spent celebrating community and the possibilities that can be realized when people work together. This year's Better Block project in Five Points will focus on urban greening and food justice with a mini-makeover of the neighborhood's Welton Street drag, enhanced by live dance performances and music, food vendors, walking tours, gardening demos and more.

Colorado Chocolate Festival 4-9 p.m. Friday, May 10 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11 $5, children under 12 free; tasting tickets, 12/$10 or 25/$20. Denver Merchandise Mart It's a known fact: Nothing arouses motherly love like chocolate. And Dana Cain's Colorado Chocolate Fest -- with its eighty vendors, chocolate talks, demonstrations and contests -- is THE place in Denver to raise that particular brand of consciousness to the highest level. The fest kicks off with a wine-tasting and smooth sounds by the Perry Weissman 3 on Friday night; Saturday is a major pig out, with charming host Chris Parente on the main stage as master of ceremonies. Do try to pace yourself.

RiNo Art Safari Noon-5 p.m. Saturday, May 11, free River North Art District Artsy mothers will love the chance to explore the wilds of the River North Art District in daylight, during the RiNo Art Safari, where dozens of galleries, studios and businesses open their doors to the public. There's a scavenger hunt for RiNo keepsakes and an overflow of downtown eateries new and old available when stomachs begin to grumble. Muertos in May 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 10 Bonacquisti Wine Company Folk art and local wines? It's Day of the Dead in May at the Bonacquisti Wine Company, where a group of regional artists will host a display of hand-made muertos and calaveras and other muertos-inspired works. Food trucks will also pay a visit to the winery for the evening, and the show will continue through the end of May.
