Officer Involved ShootingBCSO Case #09-4476
Longmont P. D. Case #09-8054
Longmont police officers and Boulder County Sheriff's deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit and shooting early Monday morning. A suspect was shot and killed following a crash and confrontation with officers near 3rd Ave/Emery Street in Longmont. No officers were injured.
A sheriff's deputy contacted the suspect in a vehicle near 8th Ave/Lashley Street at approximately 0246 hours Monday morning. The deputy requested that additional deputies respond to assist him. While speaking with the suspect, the deputy saw that he was armed with a gun and alerted the other deputies.
The suspect fled in the vehicle, leading Sheriff's deputies, Longmont police officers, and troopers from the Colorado State Patrol on a winding 20-minute chase through several subdivisions in east Longmont. Officers made multiple attempts to deploy stop sticks in front of the fleeing vehicle without success. A Longmont police officer intentionally rammed the suspect vehicle with his marked police car near the intersection of 3rd Ave/Emery Street, bringing the pursuit to a stop.
A sheriff's deputy deployed a less-than-lethal shotgun round through a window in the suspect's vehicle, breaking it. Deputies and officers gave the suspect several verbal commands to surrender, but he did not comply. The suspect produced a handgun, whereupon several officers fired upon him. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene.
The identity of the suspect, a 35 year-old male resident of Longmont, has not been released pending notification of the next of kin.
Boulder County's multi-agency Critical Incident Investigation Team has been requested by Sheriff Joe Pelle and Mike Butler, Longmont's Public Safety Chief, to coordinate the investigation of the shooting. That investigation is expected to take several days. The names of the officers involved have not been released at this point.
3rd Avenue is closed to traffic between Main Street and Collyer Street. Traffic is being re-routed along 2nd Avenue. The side streets accessing 3rd Avenue between 2nd Avenue and 4th Avenue are restricted to local traffic. The Longmont Civic Center is open for business, however access is limited. Normal traffic flow will be restored as soon as investigators are able to complete their investigation at the scene.
