While Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs is well known for non-traditional choices of meats that go into its sausages, the menu also has an impressive number of vegetarian and vegan items, and all of the vegan items have a handy little red "v" next to them, making it rather painless for veg heads to find something to eat while pro-meat friends are getting their fix of rattlesnake dogs or reindeer corndogs, the newest treat for carnivores.

There are two choices for the vegan dog -- "spicy" or "herby" -- and a few meatless toppings to choose from. I went with the spicy dog and Biker Jim's Classic topping, cream cheese and caramelized onions, but you can keep it vegan and skip the cream cheese. The dog is massive, so depending on your hunger level, a side may not be necessary, but it's nice to know the fries are vegan too ( that handy little "v" again). You can also forgo the bun if you're eating gluten-free; the dog and toppings are filling enough that you certainly won't be left hungry.

The first bite is all flavor from the sausage itself, since it takes a few bites to get to the toppings. The spicy vegan dog has a little kick, but don't be intimidated -- it won't blow your head off. Rather, the heat is just enough to wake up your tastebuds. Once you get to the toppings, the creamy and sweet profile of the cream cheese and caramelized onions, respectively, balance out the spice in a way that makes you think, "I would have never thought to put cream cheese on a vegan hot dog, or any hot dog, but it is the best choice I've made all day." Jim is just there for you that way. The dose of cream cheese is just enough to satisfy without getting messy.

The vegan dog, herby or spicy, will set you back $6.50, but if you splurge for the cream cheese and onion topping, which I highly recommend, it's an extra $1.25. If you're not up for a meal of such mass, don't forget about all the equally delicious vegetarian and vegan side dishes: The fried mac-n-cheese takes comfort food to another level.

And where else can you find good late-night vegan and vegetarian options? Next time you're out late and in need of a nosh, remember that Biker Jim's is open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Ballpark location on Larimer Street. For late night or just for lunch, Biker Jim's makes finding a meat-free meal a little easier, even in a haven for meat lovers.
