The 2017 restaurant from the team behind Rioja and Stoic & Genuine exudes an elegance befitting its location in historic Union Station. Beyond the gin-stacked bar lies a scene from a Spanish plaza, with tables tucked around a fountain and flowers. Ornate wrought-iron stairs lead to the mezzanine, where tables perch like box seats at the opera. Walls come alive with a mural of cows and peasants adapted from a seventh-century work in London’s National Gallery. But this isn’t a fine-dining spot: Ultreia is a fun-loving gastroteka, specializing in Spanish and Portuguese tapas, pintxos and gin tonics. Settle in for wood cones of chorizo and Manchego, crispy ham croquettes, and pork ribs that fall apart on contact for delightful bites of juicy meat and cumin-seasoned bark. And don’t miss the pan con tomate, with its garlic-rubbed ciabatta and puréed tomato that you slather on the bread until the juices seep ever-so-slightly into the crumb. Entrees and desserts are on offer, too, but a glass of sherry might be all the ending you need.
