No. 10: Tuesday Night Thai Chicken at Cho77
   Cho77 recently unveiled a couple of weekly specials to entice Baker neighbors on traditionally slow nights in a district better known for its weekend nightlife. On Tuesday nights, the deal is Thai fried chicken, which includes a couple of plump poultry parts, a side of slaw and a dish of sweet chili sauce for $12.
The price isn’t the only thing that makes the chicken a draw, though. General manager Alan Berger says that chef Ryan Gorby and his crew have been working on the recipe for quite a while and have nailed it in terms of both flavor and texture. And we have to agree: The spice-laden crust is fried to a shatteringly crisp jacket puffed up almost like a balloon around juicy, flavorful chicken.
There were plenty of test batches before he came up with a recipe he liked, Gorby says. The chicken is marinated in a separate slurry of ingredients, giving added depth to the flavor; limestone water is a common ingredient for Thai cooks looking for a perfect fry, he notes. A dip in the sauce adds sweet heat to the bird, while the coleslaw cools things off and gives a Deep South touch to a Southeast Asian plate.
In addition to chicken Tuesdays, Cho77 also serves up banh mi on Mondays with a rotating selection of meats, like the housemade northern Thai sausage that made the cut earlier this week. This restaurant has definitely found the cure for the Monday and Tuesday blahs.
