By 5 a.m. on March 18, fans were lined up to get inside Colorado's first Buc-ee's, off I-25 at Exit 252 in Johnstown. The massive, 72,000-square-foot travel center is much more than a typical gas station — it's a sprawling destination for endless snacks, merch, souvenirs and...gem-covered cow skull decor?

The Johnstown Buc-ee's was the first outside of the South for the Texas-born chain. But now it's eyeing a potential second Colorado location, this one south of I-25 that would involve "annexation of land outside of Palmer Lake boundaries," Palmer Lake Mayor Glant Havenar posted on Facebook last month. After one public hearing held by Buc-ee's last week, an official meeting to discuss the proposed annexation is set for December 12, and "residents are encouraged to attend that meeting to learn more, ask questions and make comments," Havenar added.

But residents haven't waited to share their thoughts, and readers added many more on the Westword Facebook page. Says Tyler:
We don't want it here.
Offers Steve:
Good ol’ Buc-ees. Cheap ticky-tacky crap for the easily amused, crap that will inevitably overwhelm landfills.
Adds Oskar:
I finally went to the one up north just to see what the fuss was about. It's like a Walmart in there. Got the souvenir Buc-ee's coffee mug.
Counters Casey:
Think how fragile & soft you have to be, to let a gas station make you mad. It provides jobs, it’s a fun environment & it’s a freaking gas station that you’re letting make you angry. That’s some weakness right there.
Adds Michael:
If anything, it should make you happy. I've never seen anyone sad in a Buc-ee’s.
Replies Mabry:
I live near the Johnstown location. It’s just a bunch of branded junk and snacks. Food is okay but I would prefer a restaurant. Lighting is obnoxiously bright. Clean bathrooms are nice, but it’s not like anyone is looking for destination bathrooms, are they? Really? That area is beautiful and doesn’t need this kind of crazy.
Suggests Cathi:
It is a nice alternative to the restroom at the lake while gassing up and getting ice or a snack. We could really use it between Colorado Springs and Raton, New Mexico. Most rest stops are closed or don't have water to wash hands. With the exception of one nice Love's, even the gas stations are shutting restrooms down.
Wonders Barbara:
It’s as if Texas is infiltrating Colorado. Do we need that?
Responds Becky:
It’s a gas station. Get over it.
Concludes Kathy:
I’m sure some people really love Buc-ee's. Good for you. I live in the quiet, rural neighborhood that will be directly impacted by the traffic, noise, light pollution, decreased air quality! No, thanks! There are so many other areas along I-25 that are already set up for this kind of circus. Please don’t destroy our beautiful forest and neighborhood. Everyone has an opinion, but please think about what the impact would be to your neighborhood.
