Lime XS Will Close Tomorrow, Reopen April 1 as the $5 Buck Drinkery

Lime XS opened at 730 East Sixth Avenue nearly ten years ago as the second outpost of the popular Larimer Square original. The Lime name also lives on at the Denver Pavilions location, which opened after the Larimer Square spot closed in 2012 — and as of Thursday, it will be the last Lime. That's because Lime XS will close on Wednesday, March 30, and reopen on April 1 as the $5 Buck Drinkery, featuring food and drink menus with nearly everything priced at five dollars or less.

Owner Curt Sims explains that the name and menu changes are a way to give the neighborhood something original and inexpensive without being tied to what the downtown Lime offers. "Clearly there's always a market for inexpensive things," he points out.

Lime XS is known for its expansive outdoor seating and for Taco Tuesdays, so Sims wanted to extend the fun and value of the Tuesday deal to every day of the week and let customers enjoy specials year-round, rather than thinking of the eatery as a place to go for margaritas and tacos only when the weather is nice. "Taco Tuesday has almost become a public service for the neighborhood," he says.

The restaurant will get some fresh paint and new signage for Friday's reopening, but will otherwise remain unchanged, since a major overhaul of the space was completed in the fall of 2014. Taco Tuesdays will be back beginning on April 5, but the rest of the menu will switch to tavern fare: burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches and nachos, for example. "We're keeping the quality high," Sims notes, adding that he will be able to keep prices low through "portion control and discipline in the back of the house."

Daily specials will include $2 beers, $3 mixed drinks and other rotating deals. For guests looking for more substantial plates, there will be two or three revolving dinner specials and weekly deals like Friday fish fries. "You can't offer fish for $5," Sims points out.

The $5 Buck Drinkery will also extend kitchen hours to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
