“Every time I bought a cake that was vegan, it was really expensive and it also didn't taste good, so I started trying to bake from home,” says Angie Wells, founder of The Cake Bar — the only exclusively vegan brick-and-mortar bakery in Denver. She adds, “It was just a hobby, but it really took off because there was a huge gap in the market for delicious-tasting vegan cakes.”
While its local competition may be limited, The Cake Bar delivers excellence all the same, ranking among the best dessert shops in Denver. Last month, animal rights organization PETA also recognized it on a national scale, naming it one of the country’s top ten bakeries for vegan wedding cakes.
Wells says that up to four-tier cakes can be entirely customized with desired flavors, frosting colors, piping styles and special themes. Walk-in samples are available for free, served similar to an ice cream shop with simple spoons. Alternatively, interested couples (or anyone planning a special occasion) can purchase a tasting box including five cake and frosting combinations to enjoy off-site.
The Cake Bar also offers consultations, allowing clients to communicate preferences and budgets. According to a 2025 study from The Knot, the average cost of a wedding cake in the United States is currently $540. Wells explains, “One of the reasons why bakeries charge so much for cakes, and in particular wedding cakes, is because there's so much back and forth over weeks, maybe even months. You have to charge for that time.”
By using its intuitive online platform, custom tiered cakes from The Cake Bar start at just $150 for fifty people. Along with affordable pricing, the bakery offers a remarkably quick turnaround. “If we have the availability, our books are open on a two-day notice,” comments Wells. She says that there have been several instances where couples’ wedding cake vendors canceled at the last minute and The Cake Bar stepped in to help.
“We love being there for people,” she says, affirming that all are welcome at The Cake Bar. She recalls the Supreme Court case involving Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, which refused to make a gay couple’s wedding cake and a transgender woman’s birthday cake in recent years. “I knew as a queer woman myself, I wanted to come in and promote inclusivity. We put kindness and respect at the forefront of everything that we do,” says Wells. She opened The Cake Bar in 2023, not long after the Masterpiece Cakeshop controversies.
In addition to celebrating inclusivity, she aimed to make her company stand out from the former tenant: Make, Believe Bakery, which also specialized in plant-based desserts. “A lot of people told me, ‘How do you think you're going to be successful when you're going to a place where a bakery closed?’ But I came in with a different angle and it just caught on,” she explains.
From April through October, wedding cakes account for around 25 percent of The Cake Bar’s sales. Meanwhile, the large majority of its business comes from walk-in customers’ cake cup orders. “It's kind of like Cold Stone but for cake,” says Wells.
Customers can choose from three cup sizes priced between $5.99 and $12.99, then select from cake flavors like red velvet, vanilla confetti, carrot and classic yellow. Its available frostings include cookie dough, caramel espresso and a decadent chocolate buttercream. More than twenty toppings such as nuts, fresh berries and rainbow sprinkles round out the menu, which is entirely plant-based. It also features options for gluten-free diners.
Not sure where to start? Per Wells’ suggestion, try the popular strawberry crunch cake featuring strawberry cake, strawberry or vanilla buttercream, Golden Oreo sandwich cookies, plus freeze-dried and fresh strawberries.
Given that The Cake Bar is limited to 625 square feet, it partners with other local plant-based food businesses. Additional offerings include kouign-amann and twice-baked almond croissants from Kind Confections, vegan ice cream pints and sandwiches from Best One Yet and nostalgic Little Debbie-inspired treats from Solstice Sweets.
