This Saturday, Arapahoe Basin will host the 8th Annual Beacon Bowl, which takes place at A-Basin's avalanche beacon park at the base of Lenawee lift. Contests are held to see who can find a buried beacon fastest. Professional instruction will be available in how to use a use a transceiver, how to probe for a buried victim, and more. Attendees will have an opportunity to test out the latest avalanche rescue gear.
The event is held in conjunction with the Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol and Backcountry Access. The ski patrol will start the day with a professional division competition, followed by the recreational competition. There will also be an avalanche rescue dog demonstration.
The event takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Registration starts
at 8:00 a.m. Cost is $20, and all proceeds go to benefit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
A silent auction will start at 3:00 p.m., and an aprés ski party with
live auction will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the A Frame. New Belgium will
be selling beer, and pizza will be sold as well; all participants get one slice of pizza with their registration. Auction prizes include
lift tickets, ski passes, an A-Basin avalanche school registration, a
Chicago Ridge cat tour, gear from Hestra, NTN and Flylow, Avalanche
tickets, concert tickets, and a New Belgium cruiser bike.
