Be My Neighbor at Unit E (Friday, free before 10 p.m., $5 after) Come dressed in your best zippered sweater, because Unit E is hosting an art show dedicated to the king of cardigans: Mister Rogers. A collection of artists will show their responses to the PBS television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, so expect to see puppets, a trolley and other creative works inspired by the iconic series.
In the Shade of Night at Pirate Contemporary Art (Friday, free) Photographer Sigri Strand creates vibrantly colored photographs inspired by femme fatales that she'll be exhibiting tonight at Pirate. The show coincides with an exhibit of Phil Bender's multimedia installations, so this First Friday opening should stand out among the masses. Before you go, check out Bree Davies' Q&A with Strand.First Friday Prom at Rakun (Friday, free) It seems every weekend some sort of adult prom is designed to have you haul out your fancy duds and relive your high school days, and this weekend is no different. Crafty boutique Rakun is hosting this dance, which will include snacks, a photobooth, dancing and an '80s fashion show. Just think, by the end of the summer you could re-wear all of your old high school dance outfits!
Mopeds. Civilized Living. at Fancy Tiger (Friday, free) Marvel at vintage mopeds tonight at a First Friday event focused on moped repair shop Moto Ocho. View the gorgeous old vehicles from this shop and service center, drink some free PBR, and consider ditching your car for one of those beautiful old pieces of metal.Film on the Farm at the Denver Green School (Friday, by donation) Sprout City Farms is presenting a series of films this month to raise awareness about environmental issues. It all kicks off with Remains of a River: Source to Sea, a documentary about adventurers Zak Podmore and Will Stauffer-Norris, who followed the Green and Colorado Rivers from Wyoming to Mexico. It's just the first in the series of thought-provoking films, so be sure to come back for more.
Derailer's 10th Anniversary Extravaganza at Derailer Bicycle Collective (Saturday, $5-15 sliding scale) Derailer, the free bicycle repair and building workshop, has been operating for ten years, and that's definitely something to celebrate. The shop is throwing a big party complete with beer, a silent auction and music from Pacific Pride, DeCollage, The Haircut, Bearsnail and Perfumeman. Cheer on the existence of this awesome place, and know that your money at the door will go toward keeping it running for decades to come.
Capitol Hill People's Fair at Civic Center Park (Saturday-Sunday, free) The Capitol Hill People's Fair is a sweaty summer tradition, squishing a ton of people into Civic Center Park for food and entertainment. It's a great place for people- and dog-watching as well as a nice, albeit somewhat claustrophobic, way to eat good food and experience a wide variety of art and entertainment. And as an extra bonus this year, the fair is committed to a more sustainable event, hoping to divert 40 percent of waste from landfills and into recycling.
Denver Chalk Art Festival at Larimer Square (Saturday-Sunday, free) The Denver Chalk Art Festival is one of the most beautiful ways to start off this season of tank tops: wander along Larimer and watch artists create magnificent chalk masterpieces. There will be food, live music and drinks to enjoy as you wander the streets, so marvel as the sidewalks become colorful pieces of art, and pray it doesn't rain.Bounce at the Grant-Humphrey's Mansion (Sunday, free) If you're yawning at all of your summer clothes from years past, freshen up your wardrobe at Fashion Denver's Summer Market. A variety of fashion shows and vendors will display fun new ways to dress up this summer. And your wardrobe isn't the only thing the event will get moving: Fashion Denver is partnering with Tease Studio to provide fitness and dance classes in the basement of the Grant-Humphrey's Mansion, so you can work on your toned summer body and then shop for fun new duds.
Yoga Rocks the Park at Sunken Gardens Park (Sunday, $10 in advance) Why confine yourself in a yoga studio when you can do your sun salutations outdoors? Yoga Rocks the Park will offer yoga classes every Sunday at various parks around Denver all summer, beginning with this kickoff event. Chaturanga to the music of various DJs, shop for organic food and products, and even get a massage after your practice at this healthy event. And be sure to reserve your spot in advance -- the price goes up to $15 on Sunday.
