Sister Spit Next Generation Tour 2012 at the St. Cajetan Event Center This night of queer-minded, feminist spoken word is sure to be one of the most lively readings you've ever been to. Helmed by San Francisco author, poet and icon Michelle Tea, the night will feature readings and performances by an exciting cast of literary legends, including Dorothy Allison (who is name-checked in Le Tigre's "Hot Topic") Gravy Train!!!'s Brontez Purnell, and much more. This installment will feature the always-hilarious Sam Tallent and female comedy troupe LadyFace, the music of Chutzpah and Cosmic Sound Child, and the art of Frank Kwiatkowski and lots more entertainment. It's sure to be, well, huge, and $8 well-spent.
Cheryl Strayed at the Tattered Cover Colfax (Friday, free) Cheryl Strayed, the brilliant writer behind the Rumpus' Dear Sugar column, will be signing and reading from her new book Wild tonight at the Tattered Cover. Learn about Strayed's arduous and transformative hike on the Pacific Crest Trail and maybe even ask for some personal advice while you're getting your book signed. She's great at that. Tonight the always-awesome group is trying out a new space -- Bender's -- but it's sure to be the same fun evening with these talented ladies.Southland Tales at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax (Friday-Saturday, $7) The Watching Hour will screen Southland Tales, the bizarre 2007 alterna-universe flick by writer/director Richard Kelly (of Donnie Darko fame) that stars Buffy, er, Sarah Michelle Gellar as an adult film star. Will this theatrical flop become a cult classic just like Donnie Darko did? That's for you to decide.
Delanie Holton-Fessler art opening at Hooked on Colfax (Saturday, free) Delanie Holton-Fessler likes circles. The Denver artist will show her explorations of the shape, entitled ROUND, tonight at Hooked on Colfax. Don't be a square, check it out! And be sure to get some of Hooked's delicious espresso while you're at it.Defying Defined Lines at eden (Saturday, free) Jaztastic Art consistently brings inventive visual shows to eden, and this night will certainly continue that trend. Janet Guenther will showcase her wood panel paintings of beautiful women, as well has her DJ skills, and Josiah Brooks's stencil art will balance out the night with punk-influenced comic art. Enjoy the art, eat some scrumptious food, and dance your heart out when the night becomes a dance party.
From Ashes to Answers at the Denver Firefighter's Museum (Saturday, $10) Firefighters are stereotyped as being hunky -- and perhaps not unfairly. The Denver Firefighters Museum will auction off twenty of the most dashing tonight all to raise funds for a monument to arson dogs. Whether you bid on the twin brothers who will cook you dinner or a date to a Rockies game, there's sure to be plenty of hot firefighters to choose from. It'll probably be just like that one Sex and the City episode where Carrie hooks up with Roger Serling.Doors Open Denver at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House(Saturday-Sunday, free) It's human nature to want to take a peek inside many of the awesome buildings in Denver. Most of the year, you can't do that without facing trespassing charges. Luckily, Doors Open Denver appeases our curiosity every year by letting the public inside some of Denver's coolest landmarks, even offering free tours through some of them.
