"He was under a lot of pressure at that time and was being watched very closely by the police authorities," Martinez says of his brother. "He had emerged as a leader."
Martinez describes the three who died that day and six other leaders killed throughout the '70s as symbols of resistance, something akin to martyrs of the Chicano Movement. In commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the death of Los Seis de Boulder, he and others have organized Symbols of Resistance, an event at Su Teatro scheduled for May 31.
"We are trying to reclaim this history, document it and make sure that the next generations know about these events," Martinez says.
The event will feature former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver, veterans of the Chicano Movement, films, art, music and workshops. To help fund the event, the group has organized an Indiegogo Campaign that will be wrapping up on May 4.
"It's been forty years since the six people got killed in Boulder, and it's a good time to take on this issue," Martinez says. "We've got a good program. It's generating interest. We're expecting a full house."
